ASEAN Green Justice for Strengthening Climate Resilience on Local and Indigenous Community

 Local and indigenous communities in ASEAN are exposed to be an enormous risk of devastation and degradation of environment conditions due to climate change. Their voices are frequently left behind even though they have continued to be reporting the risk and impact of climate change to society.  Green Justice for local and indigenous community becomes the key concept in the context of natural resource management for improving climate resilience. Hence, Green Justice is not only a seductive concept but also an attractive one intellectually and practically. It offers a mechanism for conceptualizing and deepening understanding of the means by which open and complex systems respond to dynamic and unpredictable independent variables and, potentially, produce positive outcomes to climate resilience. Although the definition of Green Justice has been widely contested, a consensus seems to be emerging based on the fair and equity access to natural resources in inclusive community to cope with rapid-onset climate change effects or significant sources of stress and interventions on human rights from environment degradation for enhancing resilience in community. 

About the Speaker

Go Takahashi is a member of Transparency International Japan and Affiliated Network for Social Accountability (ANSA) Board and a Founder of INGO in Africa. Currently, he is setting up ASEAN Green Justice Network in different nations around the globe. He is from Nitobe Leadership Fellow of International House of Japan funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. He is an official delegate to several UN Conferences including COP 21 (Paris session) and COP 23 (Bonn session) and a Special Accredited Member to SDGs Summit at UN headquarters, 2015. He had worked for Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Environment in Japan, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and World Economic Forum (WEF). He received double M.A. degrees from UN mandated University for Peace in Costa Rica and Ateneo de Manila University in Philippines in Asian Peacebuilders Scholarship Programme. He is also a MPA holder from Maxwell School of Citizens and Public Affairs of Syracuse University, USA with a BA from Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan. 
 

 

 

The Lore of Knowledge Transfer and Knowledge Generation: Of Myths and Realities

Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Ibrahim Ahmad Bajunid discussed aspects of myths found in education, for the 21st century and the reality of all aspects: philosophy, psychology, digital era, and science and technology. His presentation inspired participants to think about the importance of lifelong education and educating current students. Participants became aware of the importance of knowledge in facing digital challenges leading to IR 4.0. He emphasized that knowledge management will develop learning and knowledge networks. Dato 'Dr. Ibrahim Ahmad Bajunid proposed an integrated, proactive and correct information access path for the 21st  century education. 
 

About the Speaker

Professor Emeritus Dato' Dr. Ibrahim Ahmad Bajunid is the President of the Malaysian Association for Education (MAE), Malaysian Council for Educational Management and Leadership, and Director of IAB Global (Inspiring Authentic Benevolence). He was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor INTI-Laureate International Universities and Professor of Management, Education and the Social Sciences. Dr. Ibrahim was Director of the Regional Centre for Educational Planning, United Arab Emirates, Professor of Management, Leadership and Policy Studies and the Founding Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at University Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR) and former Director of Institut Aminuddin Baki (IAB) - The National Institue of Educational Management and Leadership. He is Distinguished Fellow Institute of Strategic and International Studies, Distinguished Associate of the Institute of Educational Leadership, Consultant, Centre for Civilizational Dialogue, University of Malaya and Senior Fellow, Universiti Islam Malaysia. Since he began his career, he has involved himself in contributions to the trade union and professional organization-non-governmental movements. He exercised the roles of Chairman, Secretary, Deputy President in the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) and the Congress of Unions of the Public and Civil Services (CUEPACS). He was the President and Fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Human Resource, Past President and Fellow of the Asia Pacific Educational Research Association, Council Member of the World Educational Research Association (WERA), Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Educational Administration, and Advisory Board Member of the Asia Pacific Centre for Leadership and Change, Hong Kong Institute of Education, Honorary Lifelong Advisor to Exploring Leadership and Learning Theories in Asia (ELLTA), Distinguished Fellow, Commonwealth Council for Educational Administration and Management (CCEAM). He is acknowledged as the leading figure who has been advancing the field of educational leadership and educational capacity building. He is Member of the Asia Leadership Roundtable Group (ALR), Jury Member for the UNESCO-Wen Hui Awards for Educational Innovations in Asia, and, Jury Panel for the National Crafts Awards, Malaysia. 
 
 
Re-emphasizing School-based Character Education in the Republic of Korea: Successes and Challenges

Since 2012, Korea has strengthened its character education at the national policy level. The focus on re-emphasizing character education is set as a counterbalance to the school bullying which has been increasing in Korea. Korean government emphasized the task of cultivating positive character traits of the students as the basic goal of education and carried out character education in schools nationwide. Many scholars and educators in Korea have analyzed the ineffective causes of past character education and implemented scientifically evidence-based character education. This lecture will especially discuss how to face the challenges of character education based on experience of character education in Korea.

About the Speaker 

Dr. Son Kyung Won specialises in moral psychology and moral education.  She received her doctoral degree in 2005 from Seoul National University. Since 2012, she has participated in national policy projects on character education program in the Republic of Korea and conducted several researches about moral education. In particular, she carried out a project on the development of character testing tools and published lots of research papers about character education.
 
 
 

 

 

CRICE and its Financial Sustainability

Centre for Research in International and Comparative Education (CRICE) is a centre under the umbrella of faculty of Education, University of Malaya. The Centre’s mission is to promote research capacity in Malaysia in international and comparative education, investigate issues that affect education policies and practice and to advance research of this sort especially in relation to South East Asia. Issues involved in this centre are internationalization, funds sourcing, research and comparative education. There is a need to think about sizeable budgets, high concentration of talented researchers and students plus a combination of freedom, autonomy and leadership. Then only can CRICE emerge as a centre in excellent universities, which focuses healthy competitiveness, unrestrained scientific inquiry, critical thinking, innovation and creativity. The long-term solution for such a situation is for CRICE and University Malaya to gain financial independence from the government. This would set the institution and centre free to do their job without political meddling or uncertainty over funding.

About the Speaker

Tan Sri Dr. Ghauth Jasmon was the 10th University of Malaya Vice-Chancellor (VC) (2008 to 2013). Prior to this appointment, he held the position of Founder President/CEO of Multimedia University for 11 years and subsequently as the Chief Executive Officer of Unity College International for 10 months. It was during his period as VC that University of Malaya made dramatic advancement in the QS World University Rankings and managed to get into the top 500 Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2010, and has remained since. It was also he who initiated the High Impact Research (HIR) programme in 2010 where he was instrumental in getting the special research allocation of almost RM600 million from the Ministry of Higher Education for UM HIR in August 2011. Tan Sri Dr. Ghauth Jasmon is currently a Board Member of Sunway University, Senior Fellow of the Jeffrey Cheah Institute, Independent Director of Citibank Berhad, International Board of Univ Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Chairman of Elite International College, Chairman of Putra International College, Chairman of Beaver-Entech Ltd, Chairman of Great Equity (HK) Ltd and Director of Seri Harmoni Sdn Bhd.

Education in the New ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Era: Three Pillars for Promoting AEC Literacy

The focus of this lecture is higher education and beyond.  First, the new ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) context is briefly described and the many new challenges and opportunities this new era presents. Then, three key pillars are identified for enhancing AEC literacy. The first is to suggest a new basic liberal arts course/curriculum for undergraduates in the AEC era. This would be a year-long interdisciplinary course that would be probably best team-taught. The second pillar is to propose the development of a new AEC Cooperative Corps which would enable recent graduates to work for two years in a neighboring AEC country as a way to enhance mutual cultural understanding, intercultural competence, and learn AEC languages. The third pillar discussed in the paper is the creation of a new ASEAN University which would have 75% students from the AEC area and 25% students from the rest of the world.

About the Speakers

Gerald W.Fry is a Distinguished International Professor in the College of Education and Human Development, University of Minnesota. He received his BA from Stanford University, a MPA from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton, and his Ph.D. from Stanford University. Previously, Gerry was a Professor of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Oregon where he also directed the International Studies Program and the Centre for Asian and Pacific Studies. He was the Team Leader for major Asian Development Bank projects in Laos and Thailand related to education reform and was a Pew Fellow in International Affairs at the Kennedy School at Harvard. His newest book, an edited one, is forthcoming in 2017 and is titled ‘Education in Thailand: An Old Elephant in Search of a New Mahout’.

 

Rosarin Apahung teaches Mathematics and is Head of Academic Administration at the Chumchon Bansang School in the remote Northeast of Thailand. Rosarin is an affiliate faculty member of the Pathumthani University and also serves as the Academic Head of the Sang Nongthum School Cluster. She is a recipient of the outstanding research-teacher award from the National Research Council of Thailand. Her current research focus on strategies for using mathematics to promote ASEAN literacy, the cultural correlates of happiness education, and comparative cultural democracy. Rosarin holds a doctorate from the Rajabhat Udon University, Thailand.
